OPTICKS · WHERE SENSE IS JUDGE

In 1704 Isaac Newton wrote a book about light. He darkened a room, let the Sun in through a small hole in the shutter, and tested every idea.

Now it is your turn at the shutter.

Ten of Newton's own experiments:

The prism.

The colors.

Measure.

See what Newton saw.

Every color and every number on the screen is worked out from the physics of light.

Newton's words are quoted exactly as printed in 1730, with plain words beside them.

VOLUME I · THE PRISM

Five levels from Book I: the long image on the wall, the second prism, the seven colors and the musical scale, the lens Newton gave up on, and the rainbow.

VOLUME II · THE RINGS

Five levels from Books II and III: the rings between two lenses, the rings in a glass mirror, the diamond, the shadow of a hair, and the stone that splits light in two.
